NaNoWriMo at a glance

Okay, there were a few widgets to choose from but I thought I'd try this one. Those of you who know how much I like calendars won't be surprised. :-)

Final NaNoWriMo update

4,159 words tonight. 50,052 total.

No, I didn't think I'd be able to do it. But there you go.

NaNoWriMo - November 14, 2011

I'm a little behind on NaNo but I should be able to make it up over the next day or two. (Once I start tonight's scene, I have to finish it ... no matter how long it turns out to be.)

However, I have an event Wednesday that will likely mean no writing. I'll have to make that up too. Good thing I don't have much in the way of weekend plans for the rest of the month.

NaNoWriMo - November 6

I spent this weekend in Toronto visiting friends and receiving a relaxing and fun half-birthday present. I didn't write much on Friday (much of the evening involved waiting for the bus - 2 hours standing in the cold - riding the bus, riding the subway, topped off with a great visit with friends) but made up the words over the last two days.

I'll a little surprised that I've managed to meet goal six days in a row. Here's to another twenty-four.

A teeny snippet:

I opened the door and stepped out to face A and the three way mirror. Even under the fluorescent lights, I knew the emerald green flattered me and the dress ... "Where did you find this?" I asked.

A stepped up behind me and rested her chin on my shoulder. "Don't ask. What do you think of it?"

"Breakfast at Tiffany's."

She smiled. "I know. And you look as gorgeous as she did."

NaNo - November 1

First day and I made goal.

My NaNo book is a romance/thriller/mystery set in the modern world. Due to that, I don't have a lot of extra world building to do. A nice change from the fantasy books.

I'll offer a little snippet at the end of the week.

I owe an update

Words did happen during my vacation. Not as many as I would have liked perhaps but words. The last couple of weeks have been busy at the office and I let this blog fall to the bottom of the to-do list.

In an attempt to shake loose the novel, I'm taking a break from it to take part in NaNoWriMo. I'm going to work on a story that's been in the back of my mind for a number of years. There will be, if not daily, frequent updates on my progress. Promise.

Progress - October 3, 2011

Title: Chaos Unleashed
Words Total: 25,342
Words Today: 225
Reason for stopping: It looks like rain and I'd rather not get caught out in it.

Wordage I liked: "I don't know what I expected from him."

"You hoped he would forget the past and return to being the child you remember."

Things discovered: Everyone reacts differently to loss. (Which I knew but certain characters are learning.)

*****

I decided to stop at the coffee shop after work. A coffee and sandwich (yummy spicy hummus for the win!) later and words have been achieved. Now to get home and check the pre-Castle to-do list.

Progress - October 2, 2011

Title: Chaos Unleashed
Words Total: 25,117
Words During Vacation: 1325
Reason for stopping: It's late and tomorrow is a work day.

Wordage I liked: Her call ended in a gasp as a wave of pain and grief washed over her.

Things discovered: Emotional turmoil shows the measure of a person

*****

Vacation #1 is almost over. Writing did happen, as did visiting with friends, walking, chatting, movie watching and relaxing. One week of work and then I'm back on vacation. There shall be more words committed to the screen/paper. There may even be a side trip for genealogy research and more visiting of friends. But there will be words.

Sunday, September 25, 2011

So ...

It's been a while, hasn't it? My total output over the past two weeks is +2 words. (Deleted 13, changed 1 and added 15.) There has been a lot of story thinking though.

Work has been taking up a great deal of my time and energy lately. However, I am officially on vacation for the next week. My original plans fell through but I contacted other friends and will be heading east and north for the week. Along with visiting, there will be words.

I'll report in when I can. If you don't hear from me until next weekend, assume I'm enjoying myself too much to be on-line.

Progress - September 11, 2011

Title: Chaos Unleashed
Words Total: 23,790
Words Today: 300
Reason for stopping: It's late and tomorrow is a work day.

Wordage I liked: Spoilers tonight, I'm afraid.

Things discovered: My main characters haven't discussed something important.

Progress - September 9, 2011

Title: Chaos Unleashed
Words Total: 23,490
Words Today: 303
Reason for stopping: Same as last time - It's getting late and I have things I need to do at home tonight.

Wordage I liked: Spoilers tonight, I'm afraid.

Things discovered: It would help to establish *where* people are talking.

*******

I'm planning to be "minimally on-line" this coming weekend. Will that lead to more words? Look for an update late Sunday. :-)

Tuesday, September 6, 2011

Progress - September 6, 2011

Title: Chaos Unleashed
Words Total: 23,187
Words Today: 350
Reason for stopping: It's getting late and I have things I need to do at home tonight.

Wordage I liked: "My son came to see me before he left on his first journey across Trella." Julie kept knitting as she spoke. "He was not happy. I'm led to believe you had something to do with that."

Things discovered: Sometimes conversations need to be awkward.

*******

I had hoped to write many words over the long weekend. Other things kept me away from the keyboard - genealogy research (my own, not my characters), apartment things, sleep - but I did talk with C about what has been happening in the story and what I think I'm going to have to do to get this story told. I have two weeks of vacation coming soon (separated by a week at the office) during which I hope to add many words to the novel.

Progress - August 29, 2011

Title: Chaos Unleashed
Words Total: 22,837
Words Today: 261
Reason for stopping: It was getting noisy and late.

Wordage I liked: She looked at the uneven stitches hanging from her needle, then glanced at the woman beside her. The needles flew in [name]'s hands, turning yarn into even rows. Birte frowned.

Things discovered: Location does make a difference.

*******

I stopped at my favourite writing coffee shop after work. A bit later than usual but I still managed some wordage. I don't know if any of this will end up in the final version of the book but it's a nice light moment.

Sunday, August 28, 2011

Progress - August 28, 2011

Title: Chaos Unleashed
Words Total: 22,576
Words Today: 335
Reason for stopping: Not quite sure where the scene is heading.

Wordage I liked: She felt her cheeks grow warm. "It might help if I actually knew how to knit," she muttered.

Things discovered: Even Birte doesn't know everything.

*******

I had a ride home Friday night, so tried to write at Starbucks. I'd forgotten how loud and crowded that place is, especially so close to the end of summer. The bulk of the words were written tonight. I'm hoping the coming week sees more words.

Monday, August 22, 2011

Progress - August 22, 2011

Title: Chaos Unleashed
Words Total: 22,241
Words Today: 305
Reason for stopping: The scene was a struggle but I think it's done.

Wordage I liked: His heart pound as he remembered the night she had returned from the spirit realm to discuss their future, as he remembered what he had said. He closed his eyes and prayed for the strength to say it again.

Things discovered: Emotions are just so much fun.

*******

I used some of my overtime to leave work early today. A good trade-off, I think. The word count above reflects editing the final paragraphs from the last writing session as well as today's new words. Some of it was like pulling teeth but they are finally out and into the file.

Tuesday, August 16, 2011

Progress - August 16, 2011

Title: Chaos Unleashed
Words Total: 21,936
Words Today: 397
Reason for stopping: Coffee was gone & it was getting late.

Wordage I liked: Anden was pushing past Ayrmid before the echo of the crash from within the cottage died away. Birte braced herself with one hand on the dry sink, the pieces of the teapot surrounding her feet.

"Why didn't you ask for help?" he blurted.

Birte turned to him, grey eyes flashing. "You have helped enough tonight."

Things discovered: Hormones and anger are a bad combination.

*******

I decided to have an early dinner (yummy smoked salmon sandwich) at the coffee shop so I could keep writing. There could have been more words but I need to determine just how angry my two characters are.

Sunday, August 14, 2011

Progress - August 14, 2011

Title: Chaos Unleashed
Words Total: 21,539
Words Today: 543
Reason for stopping: I finished the scene.

Wordage I liked: "You left us. You have no idea what it was like." One hand curled into a fist. "All your fine words about looking after Mother, about asking Father to forget you're a bastard."

Anden slowly rose to his feet. "I asked him to remember he loved her."

Things discovered: The conversation didn't go exactly as I had expected.

*******

I had an 'epiphy' about the story. What is going to happen isn't necessarily going to happen the way I thought. And that's okay.

Thursday, August 11, 2011

Progress - August 11, 2011

Title: Chaos Unleashed
Words Total: 20,996

Reason for stopping: The bus was far too bumpy and my handwriting was becoming illegible.

Wordage I liked: Everything would be a spoiler. Sorry.

Things to discover: Same as before - Merlia & Lienn's answer

*******

I spent the weekend in Toronto. It was good to have a change of scenery and chat with friends. (Nice place, K!)

The writing happened on the GO bus and while I was waiting for my connection this afternoon. Overall, I'm pleased.

Title: Chaos Unleashed
Words Total: 20,402

Reason for stopping: This scene is a struggle and forcing it would be a bad idea.

Wordage I liked: "Everything has a price. Even for a goddess."

Things to discover: Same as before - Merlia & Lienn's answer

*******

My schedule has changed this week, so there hasn't been a coffee shop visit yet. As long as the weather isn't horrible tomorrow, I think I'll stop for coffee and writing.

Monday, August 1, 2011

Progress - August 1, 2011

Title: Chaos Unleashed
Words Total: 20,282
Words Today: 708
Reason for stopping: I'm developing a headache and the next bit is going to take more energy than I currently have.

Wordage I liked: "Be welcome. If anyone still has the stomach for food, dinner is almost ready."

Birte touched her fingertips to Merlia's before moving to sit at the table. Lienn leaned toward him and whispered, "I think we're both in trouble."

Anden couldn't disagree.

Things to discover: Merlia & Lienn's answer

*******

Today was a holiday here. I was productive enough over the rest of the weekend to focus more time on writing today. I'll be away this coming weekend, so I'm going to have to get my writing in before then. (I may try scribbling on the bus rides though. Any words I add are good words, right?)

What the muse needs

Getting vacation time can be a challenge. I discovered this week that 2 of my team of 5 have already booked off the week between Christmas and New Year. (Unlike some industries, mine doesn't have a lot of slow times and we have to maintain a certain level of service.)

I have the last week of September off (hopefully for a writing retreat with friends) and now the week of Thanksgiving. Yes, that's only two weeks later. I already have work scheduled for the week following that, so if I want time off, I have to jump on it.

That week, I'll be spending time at my favourite B&B, walking along the river and lake, drinking tea, reading and writing. I won't set a word goal but there will be writing every day. Promise.

Friday, July 29, 2011

Progress - July 29, 2011

Title: Chaos Unleashed
Words Total: 19,574
Words Today: 222
Reason for stopping: There is one fly in the coffee shop and its decided I'm its best friend. That and the massage I had before lunch is making me sleepy

Wordage I liked: "Anden."

He drew back, fist ready to connect with Lienn's jaw.

"Anden." Birte's voice was low and far too close. "If you wish Ayrmid to arrive to see why I am upset, hit your brother."

Things to discover: Merlia & Lienn's answer

Reason for stopping: The ending wasn't sitting well with me. I like it better now.

Negative Words - July 25, 2011

Not as in "this is awful"; rather I achieved a negative word count for the evening.

I'm editing Blade and Bone. Usually editing lengthens my work-in-progress. This time, a chunk of story was removed that just didn't work. See, I started this story over a year ago for an anthology. For various reasons, it wasn't completed in time. Where I thought it was going then and where it ended up are two different places. That story chunk was important in my original vision. Not so much now.

Current stats:
Title: Blade and Bone
Length: 4725
Status: First edit pass complete
Next: Wait to hear what my Alpha reader thinks

Title: Chaos Unleashed
Words Total: 19,156
Words Today: 385
Reason for stopping: Saturday - I finished breakfast & needed to give up the table. Sunday - I reached the end of a scene.

Wordage I liked: (Anden has just returned home from traveling.) "Am I interrupting? I could return later."

Birte wrapped her fingers around his wrist and stared at him. He swallowed a laugh as Merlia stood.

Things to discover: Will Merlia agree to help?

Title: Chaos Unleashed
Words Total: 18,771

Wordage I liked: "Think of me as an older sister."

The ghost of a smile flitted across Merlia's face. "You don't know my older sister."

Things to discover: Will Merlia agree to help?

Things I discovered: They've rearranged the furniture since the first scene in the cottage.

Title: Blade and Bone
Words Total: 4900
Words Today: 694
Reason for stopping: The first draft is done. It's a very drafty first draft but it's done.

Wordage I liked: "Tell me why I shouldn't destroy every bone in your hands. Why I shouldn't slit your wrists and leave you to bleed out on the floor."

His gaze traveled her robe-covered body. "You could do that before I stopped you?"

She pulled the bone comb from her hair, burying its point in the table and grabbed his hand again before he could react. His hands grew cold beneath hers.

Things to discover: What my Alpha reader thinks of it.

Words Today: 906 (403 at Little Bean/503 tonight)
Reason for stopping: Little Bean - I needed to pick up my CSA share. Since a friend was meeting me there, I had to stop. Tonight - I think I'm approaching the end of the first draft and my brain is too tired to work it out tonight.

Wordage I liked: As he tried to wrench his hand free, she let the smallest trace of her power slide along their connection. She focused it on the knuckle of his little finger, twisting the joint until it swelled and purpled.

Things to discover: What Alya is going to do.

Wordage I liked: Alya stopped and rose from the chair. Taking up the candle, she lit all the others so the room held no shadows.

"Why?" Toreel asked from his place near the door.

She returned the candle to the dressing table, then turned to look at him. "I need to see your face while we talk."

Title: Blade and Bone

Wordage I liked: The signet ring flashed in the candlelight as he tossed it to her. She caught it in her free hand, glancing at it to ensure it was hers, before placing it on the table.

He raised an eyebrow. "From its condition, I would think you wear the ring often."

Alya kept her eyes on him as he took another step closer. Nothing about this felt right.

Things to discover: What the prince really wants from Alya. What Alya won't do.

What I discovered: Writing seduction scenes in a public place is like reverse voyeurism. Even sitting with my back to the wall, I get nervous that someone will read over my shoulder.

Things to discover: What the prince wants. Why Toreel needs to hide from the prince. What Alya won't do.

Long time gone

I'm finally writing more regularly. I discovered a coffee shop a few blocks from the bus terminal with good coffee and cake, tables, sofas and an atmosphere that my muse enjoys. (She also likes the root beer they sell.)

I'm taking a page from a number of other writer's blogs and will post progress reports on whatever I'm currently writing.

See the next rock for the first of these.

Plans

Ah my poor neglected blog. I'm sorry to have been away so long.

It's a sign of my lack of writing (and a few other things that have been taking my energy and attention.) One of my plans for this year - which is still to be named - is to be a more consistent blogger. And to do that, I need to actually be writing.

To get back into the routine of daily writing, A Writer's Book of Days and I are keeping company again. I will be practice writing daily using the prompts in the book. So far, I've done the WP both days this year.

My goal for January is to work on my fiction three days a week. I'm going to work on a YA piece I began but didn't finish in time for a recent anthology.

So, if anyone else is still reading this, there will be updates much more regular. Writer's honour.
